Just long long shots of characters walking or driving while downbeat music plays. This is a game which is absolutely certain that it's capital-I Important, and pads out its runtime with lengthy sequences of absolutely nothing happening. Perhaps the worst aspect of LiS2 is its self-satisfied pretentiousness. LiS2 pits you against a demented god who's determined to fuck you over, every time, no matter what decisions you try to make, as in the worst of Telltale's output.Įxcept Telltale's games typically had dashes of humor, or at least kept the pace up. LiS1 had a real sense of your actions and choices having weight and long-term impact. LiS2 is a road trip with a revolving guest cast that typically vanish after a single episode, leaving us stuck focusing on two utterly bland leads. LiS1 had a rich and diverse supporting cast that allowed it to transcend its somewhat monotone main character. LiS2 does not, and Daniel's Force powers are just treated as a tool to trigger when needed to overcome an obstacle. LiS1 had a psychic power that was well integrated into gameplay, something you could fiddle with constantly to experiment. While some might say it's unfair to compare LiS2 so heavily to its predecessor, the problem is that LiS1 did so much well, and LiS2 simply doesn't. Unfortunately, it's pretty much downhill from there. So the two brothers go on the run, trying to reach Mexico where they have family, while Sean attempts to be a replacement father to Daniel. Then a minor confrontation with a racist neighbor escalates when a cop shows up and mistakenly shoots their father dead, causing Daniel to manifest psychic powers in a huge psi-blast that kills the cop and others nearby. Sean is a typical high schooler, a budding artist who's mostly concerned with the party he's about to attend that evening, while Daniel is hyperactive, imaginative, and kind of a brat. Sean (18) and Daniel (10) are two Mexican-American brothers living in Washington state. Life Is Strange 2 starts out with a pretty decent setup. Throw in boring lead characters, hamfisted symbolism, contrived plot twists, weak supporting cast, and even less gameplay than usual, and it becomes a 20+ hour slog that's hard to recommend to anyone except LiS\Dontnod completionists.

TL DR: LiS2 takes all the new and creative ways its predecessor tried to innovate episodic narrative adventure gameplay, and tosses it all straight out the window in favor of a cookie-cutter retread of the Telltale "choices DON'T matter" design template.
